Course “Protection of the rights of people with disabilities”

The course will allow participants with and without disabilities to step into the role of human rights advocates and develop skills in various methods of protecting human rights at both the national and international levels.

Have you ever wondered, “Who are persons with disabilities, and how should we interact with them?” Do you want to learn what human rights are and whether persons with disabilities have any special rights? Have you considered how to exercise your own rights or how to support others in their fight for their rights? Then this course is for you.

We will discuss changing attitudes toward disability, the history and development of different models of disability, various types of disabilities, and why disability does not limit people in the 21st century. We will explore whether special rights exist or whether every person, regardless of disability or any other characteristic, is entitled to the same human rights.

We want course participants not only to learn more about the supposedly “hidden” world of persons with disabilities—which does not actually exist—but also to ask themselves, “What can I do to support someone in their fight for human rights?”

We view this course as a first step toward civic engagement in support of persons with disabilities and toward building a better, more accessible world where everyone can exercise their rights on an equal basis.

This course is presented by the Fight For Right civil society organization as part of the project “Fight for Rights: Strengthening the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Ukraine,” implemented with the support of the Human Rights Fund of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ukraine.
